Instructions for Domestic Applicants

U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have obtained a U.S. bachelors degree

 

Application Deadline:

The application deadline is December 15th for the following fall consideration. You must have all materials listed below and the application submitted by the end of the business day, 5 PM EST, on December 15th.

Please note, the electronic system does not send Letter of Recommendation requests to your recommenders until after you have submitted and paid your application fee. This means you must either 1) have your recommenders email us the recommendation form and letter (see below) for receipt on or before December 15th or 2) collect letters of recommendation in a sealed envelope signed from the recommender on the seal and mail or deliver them to us on or before December 15th or 3) complete and submit your application well before December 15th to allow time for your recommenders to complete the recommendation online using the electronic system. They must submit the recommendations on or before December 15th.

 

Application Components:

  1. Application
  2. Official GRE or MCAT scores
  3. Proof of English proficiency - All non-native speakers of English (list of predominantly English Speaking Countries) must present evidence of English language proficiency as part of their application. You may demonstrate your proficiency in English for a graduate program in one of five ways. If you are a non-native English speaker, please review the criteria
  4. Official transcripts from all universities attended (official copies from your Registrar may be accepted for the review process; however matriculates must have an official transcript on file)
  5. Personal Statement
  6. Three Letters of Recommendation (see notes below)
  7. Department Questions (found at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/IBMG
  8. Proof of participation in Recruitment Programs (if applicable, this would a letter from the Director of the programs such as McNair, LSAMP, Herbert Fellows, Bridges to the Doctorate, AmeriCorps, etc.)
  9. Immigration documentation, if applicable
  10. Application fee ($62.50 non-refundable fee)

 

STEP 1.

Complete the free online Informal Credential Review (which can be found at https://caits.iu.edu/ibmg/prescreen.aspx) and follow the suggestions in the reply.

We review the Informal Credential Reviews between May and November. You will receive direction on how to proceed within two weeks from submitting your credentials unless you submitted it prior to May. Submissions prior to May will be responded to as time permits, but not later than mid-May. Likewise, submissions submitted on or after December 1st may not receive a response due to the application deadline of December 15th.  You can find the average scores for a typical admissions year at http://grad.medicine.iu.edu/degree-programs/ibmg/admission-requirements.  

 

STEP 2.

Complete the online application found at http://graduate.iupui.edu/admissions/apply.shtml. There is a $60 application fee.

Initial Screen

Here you will be asked a series of questions which will identify which application you will complete.

Personal Information Tab

This tab consists of the basic information such as your full name, country of citizenship, birth date, and ethnicity related questions.

Additional Information Tab

This tab consists of questions related to: bio and demographics, contact information, residency and behavior.

Application Information Tab

This tab consists of questions related to your intended degree and major, term you wish to enroll, institutions attended, employment history, and self-reported test scores.

This tab consists of questions related to letters of recommendation, your personal statement, and department questions.  Details on what is required for each document may be found below.

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation should come from a lab mentor, P.I., or a senior lab researcher with a Ph.D. whom have both a professional and direct knowledge of the applicant. Current or recent academic instructors and/or employers are also accepted, but they must also have direct knowledge of the applicant. Letters should not be from friends, lab mates, coworkers, priests, or irrelevant instructors, faculty, or administrators. 

Please note, the electronic system does not send Letter of Recommendation requests to your recommenders until after you have submitted and paid your application fee. This means you must submit Letters of Recommendation in one of the following ways:

  1. Applicant completes and submits the application well before December 15th to allow time for recommenders to complete the recommendation online using the electronic system. All recommendations must be received on or before December 15th. (preferred method)
  2. Applicant will share the recommendation form and letter requirements with the recommenders, and the recommenders will email their recommendation to biomed@iupui.edu with the subject line referencing the name of the applicant and "Recommendation Letter".
  3. Recommender mails the letter of recommendation directly to IUSM Graduate Division in a sealed envelope with the recommender's signature on the seal of the envelope for receipt by the IUSM Graduate Division on or before December 15th.
  4. Applicant collects letters of recommendation in a sealed envelope from their recommenders with the recommender's signature on the seal of the envelope and delivers or mails the recommendations for receipt by the IUSM Graduate Division on or before December 15th.

You may either utilize the electronic submission option found in the online application (this is preferred if you know for sure your recommenders will submit your letter on or before December 15th); or have referees e-mail recommendations to biomed@iupui.edu; or have letters mailed directly to the address listed below.

Applicants should pick referees that will be able and willing to comment on the following:

  • How long and in what capacity do you know the applicant?
  • How many students have you known at this level?
  • What is the candidate's intellectual potential; ability to plan and conduct research; creativity and originality; knowledge in chosen field; ability to work independently and with a team; maturity; motivation for graduate study; writing ability; oral expression; integrity; and overall potential for graduate work in biomedical sciences.

Personal Statement

You will upload your personal statement from your computer or external drive.  Include the following:

  • Personal characteristics and abilities
  • Research interest
  • Career objectives
  • Your preparation for graduate study (e.g. education, research experience, other relevant experiences)
  • Explain any problems or inconsistencies in your academic records or scores
  • Explain why you want to attend the Indiana University School of Medicine BioMedical Gateway (IBMG) Program for Ph.D. Study and faculty that interest you

Department Questions

There are additional questions that the admissions committee has requested from applicants to the IBMG Program for Ph.D. Study. Completing the Department Questions takes approximately 20 minutes. We recommend that you have your transcripts and resume/CV on-hand while completing these questions.

Submit Tab

This tab consists of affirmations statements and it is where you will finalize your application and submit it along with your application fee.  Please note that your application will not be submitted and processed without paying your application fee.

 

STEP 3.

Ensure that all hard copy supporting documents have been submitted to the address listed below.  Applications will not be reviewed until all supporting documentation has been received.

Official Transcripts must be received from all previous colleges and universities attended.

Three Letters of Recommendation

The preferred method for receiving letters of recommendation is electronically via the online application. We will accept letters of recommendation via email from the recommender as well as via mail.

Official Test Scores

You will self-report your test scores in the online application; however, we require official test scores. You will order them through the testing service, and the testing service will send them to us directly.

To ensure the Indiana University School of Medicine Graduate Division and IBMG Program for Ph.D. Study emails reach you please add biomed@iupui.edu and obtimer@iupui.edu to your address Book or Safe Senders List.  The Indiana University School of Medicine Graduate Division is not responsible for communications sent from these emails being filtered to your SPAM/junk folder.

Official communication will be sent via electronic mail to the primary email listed on the application. This should be an email that you check regularly. Should your email address change, you must notify biomed@iupui.edu immediately to update your records. ONLY applicants made an offer will receive an official decision in the mail. All applicants, whether accepted or rejected will be sent an electronic mail of the application decision.

All applicants will receive a status update the week of March 15th.

 

Hard Copy Application

The online application is the preferred method of applying to the IBMG program; however, if you are unable to complete the online application you may submit a hard copy application.  If you do not have access to a computer or the internet please call the Graduate Division at (317) 274-3441 to have a paper application mailed to you. You will need to submit all of the application components including the non-refundable application fee in order for your application to be complete and considered for review.

 

NOTE: Matriculates may be subject to a criminal background check if required by funding agencies.

  • No status in the U.S.
  • Non-permanent status in the U.S.
  • Permanent Resident with a bachelor's degree earned outside the U.S.
  • U.S. Citizen with a bachelor's degree earned outside the U.S.

Applicants may also submit a PDF of their CV, abstracts, and publications. DO NOT submit documents related to individual workshops, conferences, certificates of participation, and awards received.

Review and follow the information provided by the Office of International Affairs.  Please note that if you plan to bring dependents to the United States, you must complete the Financial Information for International Students found at http://iapply.iupui.edu/expenses.

 

STEP 3.

Complete the online application found at http://graduate.iupui.edu/admissions/apply.shtml. here is a non-refundable application fee. Please remember to save your username and password in a safe place. You may save your application in process and come back to it to complete and submit.
