Indiana University School of Medicine offers a joint MD/MPH degree in which students earn both the MD and MPH degree during the course of the five-year medical school program. Students work individually with advisors in both the MD and MPH programs to coordinate the MPH curriculum and medical rotations. Students are required to complete an internship and culminating project as part of the MPH Program, and can choose from the following MPH concentrations:
(1) the Epidemiology concentration prepares medical students for clinical population-based research
(2) the Health Policy and Management concentration prepares students for careers in policy development and program management
(3) the Behavioral Health Science concentration prepares medical students for a health education role in clinical care
Physicians with training in public health work in a variety of public, private and academic settings. The MD/MPH degree offers physicians a broad, contemporary perspective and significant advantage when seeking employment that involves planning and managing health systems, integrating clinical and public health research, determining the causes of disease, thinking critically in population-based medicine, and implementing disease control strategies. Today’s health care issues such as medical care for the poor and underinsured, the AIDS epidemic, drug abuse, tobacco use, and exposure to environmental contaminants offer persuasive evidence for combining the MD and MPH degrees. Physicians with the MPH degree hold leadership positions in health departments, federal agencies such as CDC and NIH, health provider organizations, schools of public health and medicine, private practice, and international health agencies.
