The IUSM Awards Committee chaired by Nuria Morral and Tom Inui is pleased to announce that Dr. Bert O'Malley of the Baylor College of Medicine is the recipient of the 2009 Beering Award. Dr. O' Malley is the Thomas C. Thompson Professor & Chairman, Dept. of Molecular and Cellular Biology and Director of the Baylor Center for Reproductive Biology. His research group has made fundamental discoveries in characterizing the intracellular mechanisms by which steroid hormones exert their actions through nuclear receptors. Dr. O' Malley will present the Beering Lecture "Nuclear Receptor Coactivators: Mechanisms and Medical Relevance" at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday October 28th in the Riley Outpatient Center (ROC) Auditorium.

2008 Molecular Biology Workshop | July 7-24, 2008 (all day Monday through Friday)
The 2008 Molecular Biology Workshop (course name: Methods in Molecular Biology & Pathology) is a combination of lectures and labs and covers basic molecular biology techniques, such as DNA and RNA isolation, molecular cloning, Southern and Northern hybridization, library screening, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), DNA sequencing, etc. It is a 3-credit graduate course (GRAD, G890) in Summer Session II, 2008. There are also spaces available for faculty and staff members. Individuals interested in the workshop should contact Dr. Chao-Hung Lee by May 31st.

The 2007 International Federation of Adipose Therapeutics and Science (IFATS) Public Forum being held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Downtown Indianapolis Thursday, October 18th 5:30-6:30pm. The 2007 IFATSconference will gather renowned international as well as local scientists in the field to answer the public's questions on stem cell research.

IFATS' current scientific areas of interest relate to facilitating the use of adipose tissue as a source of adult stem cells that have the potential to regenerate and repair many different tissues in the body, the generation of new fat tissue for reconstruction after cancer or birth-related defects, and the development of treatments for excess body fat.

First NIH National Graduate Student Research Festival | October 12-13, 2006
Where: NIH, Bethesda, MD
The deadline for students to apply is Thursday, June 1. Recommendation letters from research mentors/advisorscan be submitted after that deadline but review of applications will begin June 2. Expenses to attend the Festival will be covered by NIH. Both U.S. and international students at U.S. universities are eligible to apply. The Festival is for students nearing the endof their PhD (or equivalent). Degree requirements must be met by October, 2007. The Festival will be of most value to students interested in exploring opportunities for postdoctoral research on the NIH campuses.
