Certificate in Biotechnology

Certificates

In response to the expanding frontiers in biotechnology and the biomedical sciences, the Indiana University School of Medicine has created the Biotechnology Training Program.  The program, geared toward students wanting to boost their career in the sciences, offers a Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology and a Master's degree in Biotechnology--both from the prestigious IU Graduate School.  Both programs provide the latest instruction, hands-on laboratory courses and an interactive, problem-based learning experience.

  • The Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology program is designed for both for research technicians with baccalaureate degrees in academic and industrial laboratories and for new college graduates who want to continue their education in biotechnology fields.  The curriculum includes laboratory work in molecular biology/genomics, cell biology, and proteins and proteomics.  The certificate program takes a minimum of 1 ½ years to complete part-time.  Students take ~2 courses per semester for three semesters and one summer session).   Learn more.
  • The M.S. in Biotechnology program will start in the fall 2005.  The core curriculum for this new MS degree program is the 17 credits of the the Biotechnology Certificate.  The M.S. track includes an elective basic science course, a course in scientific writing and research with a faculty mentor and a School of Medicine biotechnology research core facility.  The M.S. can be completed part-time in 1 ½ years in addition to the Certificate curriculum or a total of 3 years.  Learn more.

The IU Biotechnology Training Program is part of the Indiana Genomics Initiative (INGEN), a landmark endeavor made possible with a $105 million grant from the Lilly Endowment to Indiana University.  IU School of Medicine's top research faculty serve as program instructors.

Students in the program have access to the most modern INGEN and School of Medicine core research facilities for cellular imaging, DNA sequencing, proteomics, gene expression, protein expression, flow cytometry and bioinformatics.  The teaching laboratory in Indianapolis is newly completed.

The cost of the program can be computed from the current IUPUI credit hour rates for 'Graduate Other' which is $214.95 per credit for Indiana residents in 2005-2006.  The three laboratory courses have an additional laboratory fee of $250 each.  Hence, the cost of the Certificate is less than $4,500 and the 30 credit M.S. is less than $7,200.  This is one of the least expensive graduate Biotechnology Training programs nationally.

If you are interested in applying for admission to the Indiana University Graduate School Certificate in Biotechnology program please contact the program director for information on admissions requirements and the application process.
