Ph.D. Programs

The Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) offers 10 research-based biomedical science Ph.D. programs:  Anatomy and Cell Biology; Cellular and Integrative Physiology; Medical and Molecular Genetics; Biomolecular Imaging and Biophysics; Medical Neuroscience; Microbiology and Immunology; Pathology and Laboratory Medicine; Pharmacology; and Toxicology.

The ten Ph.D. programs participate in an “open enrollment” system named The Indiana University School of Medicine BioMedical Gateway (IBMG) Program.  The IBMG Program provides a shared first year experience for all School of Medicine biomedical science predoctoral (Ph.D. program) students facilitating collaborations among students and faculty.  Students choose an advisor in a Ph.D. program at the end of their first year.

Combined Degrees

IUSM's unique degree combinations, including the Indiana Medical Scientist Program (MD/PhD), MD/MPH, MD/MBA, and MD/MA programs.

Educational Research-based Ph.D. Programs

Indiana University School of Medicine also offers one Medical Education Research track in Anatomy and Cell Biology. The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology has developed a separate PhD track that will prepare students for careers in anatomical teaching and educational research. For more information on how to apply, curriculum details, and degree requirements visit http://anatomy.iupui.edu

M.S. Programs

Research-based M.S. degrees are offered in each of the 10 Ph.D. disciplines:  Anatomy and Cell Biology; Cellular and Integrative Physiology; Medical and Molecular Genetics; Biomolecular Imaging and Biophysics; Medical Neuroscience; Microbiology and Immunology; Pathology and Laboratory Medicine; Pharmacology; and Toxicology.  Specialized M.S. programs are also offered: biotechnology, clinical research, genetic counseling, medical science, and pathologists' assistant.

Certificate in Biotechnology

With support from the Indiana Genomics Initiative (INGEN) an Indiana University Graduate School certificate in biotechnology has been established.  The objective is to prepare students for research technician jobs in the biotechnology workforce.  The program is designed for part-time students with all classes offered after 3:30 PM.

Graduate Minors

Several research areas are illustrated by the Ph.D. degree “minor” topics that are often taken by students supported by training grants.  The Indiana University School of Medicine graduate minors include:  Bioinformatics, Biomolecular Imaging, Cancer/Cancer Biology, and Diabetes.

Physician Scholar

The Physician Scholar Program at the Indiana University School of Medicine is for students who wish to pursue careers in medicine that include teaching and research.  It is aimed toward students who have excelled in an area of biomedical science such as genetics and biochemistry or who plan to pursue an interest in bioethics or health policy while enrolled in medical school.
